Psychotherapy, also known as therapy or counseling, is a collaborative and confidential process where individuals work with a trained mental health professional to explore, understand, and address various challenges, emotions, and aspects of their lives. It provides a supportive and non-judgmental space for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings, gain insight into their behaviors and patterns, and develop coping strategies to navigate life's complexities.
Therapists utilize evidence-based techniques and therapeutic approaches to help individuals enhance their emotional well-being, manage stress, improve relationships, and work towards personal growth and positive change. The therapeutic relationship fosters trust and open communication, allowing individuals to explore their concerns, set goals, and build the skills needed to lead a more fulfilling and balanced life.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses. They can prescribe medication, offer medical interventions, and often work in collaboration with other mental health professionals. For example, if an individual is diagnosed with clinical depression and requires medication, a psychiatrist may prescribe antidepressants and monitor their effects.
A clinical psychologist holds a master's degree in psychology and specializes in assessing and treating emotional, mental, and behavioral disorders. They utilize psychotherapy and various therapeutic interventions to help individuals navigate challenges, develop coping skills, and promote mental well-being. For instance, a clinical psychologist may work with someone experiencing anxiety through cognitive-behavioral therapy to address and change patterns of anxious thinking and behavior.
Counselors, often with a master's degree in counseling, focus on helping individuals cope with various life challenges, emotional difficulties, and interpersonal issues. They provide guidance, support, and practical strategies. For example, a counselor might assist someone dealing with grief after a significant loss by offering empathetic listening, coping strategies, and a safe space for expression.
In a nutshell, psychiatrists primarily address mental health issues from a medical perspective, while clinical psychologists and counselors focus on therapeutic interventions, each with a distinct scope of practice and expertise. The choice among these professionals often depends on the nature and severity of the individual's concerns.
No, it is not accurate to categorize therapy or counseling as exclusively intended for individuals facing severe mental health challenges or mental illness. While therapy is a valuable resource for addressing mental health disorders, it is equally beneficial for individuals dealing with a range of concerns, including everyday stress, relationship issues, personal growth, and navigating life transitions. Therapy provides a supportive and confidential environment for individuals to explore their thoughts and emotions, gain insights into their behaviors, and develop coping strategies. Seeking therapy is a proactive step towards overall well-being, regardless of the severity of mental health challenges.
Do I really need therapy? I can usually handle my problems.
Engaging in therapy represents a significant investment in your holistic health and well-being. Despite successfully navigating challenging life situations independently, seeking the guidance of a trained therapist provides an additional perspective for problem-solving. The decision to pursue therapy reflects strength, insight, acceptance, and a dedication to fostering positive change. Active participation in therapy has the potential to bring about enduring cognitive, emotional, and behavioral transformations in your life.
Who can receive therapy/counselling?
Therapy/counseling serves individuals experiencing periods of sadness, worry, or stress. It is a valuable resource for those seeking to address harmful behaviors, change negative thought patterns, or enhance self-awareness. People often seek therapy/counseling for various challenges such as mood and emotional issues, anxiety, grief, relationship concerns, family dynamics, social interactions, parent-child dynamics, work-related stress, addiction, behavioral issues, decision-making dilemmas, and more.
For individuals under 18 years old, obtaining consent from their primary caregivers is a prerequisite before commencing therapy/counseling.
Yes, as a minor, you can seek therapy or counseling. However, the presence of a legal guardian is necessary to sign consent forms and other pertinent legal documents. In certain instances, the therapist may also require the legal guardian to be present to provide background information about the client.
Since each individual comes with unique challenges and objectives, therapy/counselling varies from person to person. Generally, you'll engage in discussions about current life events, relevant aspects of your personal history, and share progress or insights gained from previous sessions. The duration of therapy depends on your specific needs—ranging from short-term focus on particular issues to longer-term exploration for personal growth. Regular sessions, usually scheduled weekly, are common.
Active participation enhances the benefits of therapy. Its ultimate goal is to help you apply what you learn in sessions to your daily life. Besides in-session work, your therapist may suggest activities outside, such as reading, journaling, or behavior tracking, to support your progress. Those seeking psychotherapy/counselling are typically prepared for positive changes, open to new perspectives, and take responsibility for their lives.
You are not required to bring anything specific to the session. However, if you have a referral letter from another organization or relevant reports, bringing them would be helpful for the therapist to review. Apart from that, you can also bring a pen and notebook if you prefer taking notes during the session. It is highly recommended to silence your phone during the session to ensure interrupted focus.
Typically, the duration of each therapy session ranges from 60 to 90 minutes for the initial session and approximately 45 to 50 minutes for subsequent sessions. On average, the therapy process may span from 6 to 12 sessions. However, the duration could extend based on the nature of the client's issues, individual needs, and available resources.
In the initial session, the therapist aims to form an initial understanding of the client and their concerns. The client will be encouraged to share details about their challenges and personal background.
For clients under 18, caregivers may be involved to provide pertinent information about the client's issues. The client or caregivers may also discuss their goals and the preliminary treatment plan. These goals and plans can be adjusted or refined as the therapeutic process progresses.
Expectations for the first session include arriving 10-15 minutes early to complete consent forms and other necessary paperwork. During the therapy session, the therapist will address distressing issues or topics the client wishes to explore. Together, the therapist and client will collaboratively establish therapy goals. Towards the end of the session, the therapist will review the recommended treatment plan.

Prescription of medications is a collaborative decision between individuals and psychiatrists. While therapy primarily involves counseling and psychotherapy provided by therapists/counsellors, psychiatrists may prescribe medications if it is deemed necessary to manage specific mental health conditions. It's worth noting that the decision to incorporate medication into the treatment plan is made with careful consideration of the individual's unique needs and preferences. Medications, when prescribed, are viewed as tools that can complement therapy to enhance overall mental well-being.
Currently, EMEROND Psychological Services does not provide any psychiatry services. Our therapists are not licensed to provide prescriptions or medications.
Psychological assessment, also referred to as psychological testing, is typically administered by a psychologist to acquire comprehensive insights into an individual's behaviors, abilities, and overall functioning. The nature and format of an assessment can vary based on its intended purpose. Generally, an assessment incorporates clinical interviews, observations, and formal testing methodologies to thoroughly understand the individual being evaluated.
In the initial consultation, therapists will engage in a comprehensive discussion with the client or caregiver to understand their concerns, gathering essential information about the client and their concern. This aids in determining the optimal course of action, including the potential need for a formal psychological assessment. The assessments will then be conducted by utilizing various methods ranging from one-on-one testing sessions to questionnaires to gather corroborative information.
Following the assessments, the gathered data is meticulously scored and interpreted. The results are then thoroughly evaluated and integrated with the provided information to address the reason for referral, clarifying the reasons for seeking the assessment. Findings and personalized intervention strategies are shared with the client through verbal feedback and/or a comprehensive psychological report. At the conclusion of the assessment, clients have the option to request a full psychological report for their records.
The duration of a psychological assessment process can vary, typically ranging from 2 to 16 hours and may span over multiple sessions. The timeframe is influenced by factors such as the nature of concerns, the individual's age, and several other relevant considerations that will be discussed with the client. Once the psychological assessment plan has been discussed, your therapist will inform you on the duration of the upcoming assessment sessions and number of sessions required for the process to be completed.
